Ecosystem Services of Urban Rivers

A Balance between People and Nature

ECOSEVA Project Kick-off Conference in Liberec

Liberec | Technical University | 11 February 2027

Conference Theme

How can urban rivers and streams serve both people and nature? The conference will present what research and practice tell us about the ecosystem services of streams and small rivers in cities, how they can be assessed and how to take them into account in planning and restoration. Examples will come from Czech and Saxon cities.

Conference Vision

What change do we want the conference to help bring about?
For cities to see their rivers and streams as an asset, not just as technical infrastructure, and to take their benefits into account when making decisions about public space.

Conference Mission

What is the conference's mission?
To connect research and teaching with the practice of municipalities and river managers in Czechia and Saxony, to share experience and to identify what professionals need. This will be the basis for the training that the ECOSEVA project is developing.

In our towns and cities, we often see streams and small rivers as mere ditches that carry water away, or we simply hide them in pipes. Yet they give us more than we realise. In summer they cool the streets, during heavy rain they hold back water, and they offer space for walking, running and children's play. By the water we can relax and recharge. People meet there, and neighbourhoods with a living stream are better places to live. We call these benefits ecosystem services.

The ECOSEVA project wants professionals to be able to work with these services. We are developing training for those who plan cities, look after their rivers and streams, or teach about them. ECOSEVA is funded by the Interreg Saxony – Czech Republic programme and is a close collaboration between four partners from both sides of the border.

A key strength of the project is mutual inspiration, as Czech and Saxon cities often approach similar challenges in different ways. At the kick-off conference we will share what we already know, and we look forward to hearing about the issues you face in your city. Come along with your experience and ideas.
